Bayern beat Freiburg to return to first place, Dortmund edged past Eintracht Frankfurt, and Bayer Leverkusen suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Hoffenheim. Matchday 7 produced 25 goals across nine games. We look back at the main results and compare them with our pre-match analysis on 888STARZ.
Freiburg 1-3 Bayern Munich
Freiburg had won all three of their previous home league games, but Bayern ended that run. Dayot Upamecano opened the scoring in the 16th minute, Serge Gnabry netted his 100th Bundesliga goal, and Michael Olise added a third in stoppage time. Freiburg’s consolation came through a Tom Bischof own goal.
Bayern held the xG advantage, 2.25 to 1.37, although Freiburg had a late chance to equalise before Olise’s goal. Jonas Urbig denied Matthias Ginter to protect the visitors’ lead.
Our preview highlighted Freiburg’s home form and Bayern’s injury concerns following their Champions League fixture. The visitors coped without Manuel Neuer and stayed top with 17 points.
Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Eintracht Frankfurt
After two consecutive draws, Dortmund returned to winning ways. Substitute Maximilian Beier scored the only goal in the 80th minute from a Jobe Bellingham assist.
Dortmund had a narrow xG advantage, 1.36–0.92. Frankfurt created several dangerous chances, but Gregor Kobel kept them out. At the other end, Serhou Guirassy struck the crossbar.
Ahead of the round, we highlighted Dortmund’s defensive record — just four goals conceded in six games — and Frankfurt’s problems at the back. Dortmund kept another clean sheet and have now conceded only four times in seven matches. They remain level with Bayern on points, trailing only on goal difference.
Hoffenheim 3-0 Bayer Leverkusen
The biggest surprise of the round. The game was goalless until the 79th minute, when Andrej Kramarić converted a penalty. He then set up Alexander Prass before hitting the crossbar with a shot that Max Moerstedt followed in to complete the rout.
The 3.19–0.62 xG figures show that the scoreline reflected Hoffenheim’s dominance. It was their first Bundesliga clean sheet of the season and brought Leverkusen’s five-match unbeaten run to an end.
In our preview, we noted that Hoffenheim had just beaten Lyon 3-0 in the Europa League despite struggling domestically. They have now won twice in a row, although they remain four points outside the top four.
RB Leipzig 4-0 Elversberg
The newly promoted visitors held their own in a goalless first half, with Leipzig generating just 0.06 xG in 45 minutes. The game changed completely after the break. Tidiam Gomis opened the scoring, Rômulo struck twice, and Christoph Baumgartner added another.
Leipzig finished ahead 2.18–0.46 on xG. Antonio Nusa provided two assists, while half-time substitute Rômulo proved decisive in front of goal.
Our preview highlighted Elversberg’s impressive start and their ten points from six games. They could not keep up with Leipzig’s higher tempo after the interval. The hosts climbed to fifth and maintained their perfect home record.
Stuttgart 2-3 Borussia Mönchengladbach
After six straight defeats, Gladbach finally collected their first points. Ermedin Demirović put Stuttgart ahead in the fifth minute, but Joe Scally, Shuto Machino and Waël Mohya turned the game around. Demirović’s second goal only reduced the deficit.
The visitors deserved their win on the underlying numbers, leading 2.38–1.19 on xG. Gladbach’s substitutions and quick transitions made the difference, with Mohya contributing a goal and an assist.
We had highlighted the contrast between Stuttgart’s European results and their poor domestic form. That problem remains: five defeats in seven Bundesliga games and 15th place. Gladbach are still bottom, but now have three points.
Other Matchday 7 Results
Werder Bremen beat Mainz 3-2, with Niclas Füllkrug scoring twice from the penalty spot. Paderborn defeated Hamburg 1-0 thanks to Rayan Philippe’s goal.
Augsburg and Union Berlin drew 1-1, with both teams finishing with ten men. Cologne and Schalke played out a 0-0draw.
Bundesliga Standings After Matchday 7
Bayern and Dortmund are level on 17 points, with Bayern ahead on goal difference: +19 to +8. Freiburg and Leverkusen have 13 points each, followed by Leipzig and Werder Bremen on 12.
Union Berlin sit in the bottom two with six points, while Gladbach remain last with three.

How the Results Compared with Our Preview
The five featured matches confirmed several trends from our preview: Bayern’s attacking strength, Dortmund’s defensive consistency and Leipzig’s home advantage. Hoffenheim’s win over Leverkusen was far more convincing than their league positions suggested beforehand.
Stuttgart’s defeat was not simply bad luck, either. Despite their stronger European record, they allowed Gladbach to produce almost twice as much xG.
What Changed After Matchday 7
Bayern and Dortmund remain the league’s only unbeaten teams. Freiburg held on to third despite losing, while Leverkusen stayed fourth as their rivals also dropped points.
Bayern host Borussia Dortmund on 31 October. Both teams enter Der Klassiker on 17 points, although Bayern’s goal difference is 11 better. The winner will take control of the title race heading into November.
