Five teams level on 14 points after seven rounds — Ligue 1 has one of the tightest title races among Europe’s top leagues. Lyon lead PSG on goal difference, with Paris FC, Lille and Monaco close behind. Four of those five clubs will face each other this weekend.
Matchday 8 runs from 23 to 26 October. We look at the key fixtures, recent form and underlying numbers ahead of another round of French league action with 888STARZ.
PSG vs Lyon: Two Leaders Coming Off Very Different European Results
26 October | 2nd vs 1st
PSG have 14 points and have won their last four league matches. In midweek, the Parisians beat Barcelona 4-2 in the Champions League, producing 3.70 xG to their opponents’ 2.23. However, that victory came at a cost. Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Marquinhos are among the players unavailable for the Lyon clash.
Lyon had a very different European experience, losing 3-0 to Hoffenheim. The German side led 2.09 to 0.87 on xG despite Lyon enjoying more possession.
In Ligue 1, though, Paulo Fonseca’s side sit top on goal difference and have conceded just five goals in seven matches. Their away form is less impressive: only four of their 14 points have come on the road.
Lyon also have a decent recent record at the Parc des Princes, winning three of their last six visits, including a 2-1 victory in April.
PSG still have the stronger attacking numbers, but their absences raise questions about whether they can maintain the same intensity. Lyon have been more dependable defensively, although their away performances have not quite matched their league position.
The fixture has been moved from 25 to 26 October.
Monaco vs Lille: Level on Points, Different Recent Form
25 October | 5th vs 4th
Both sides have collected 14 points, but they approach this meeting in very different form.
Monaco have won only one of their last four league matches. They lost 1-0 to Lorient last weekend, failing to score for the first time this season. They have also gone five games without a clean sheet.
Lille have been far more consistent, losing just once in seven rounds and conceding only five goals — the joint-best defensive record in Ligue 1 alongside Lyon. Their latest outing ended in a 1-1 draw with Brest.
The head-to-head record adds another concern for Monaco: Lille have won all three of their most recent league meetings.
Paris Brunner is returning for Monaco, but one win in four matches suggests their problems go beyond the absence of a single player. Lille have been much better at controlling games without the ball, and their defence could once again frustrate the hosts.
Lens vs Paris FC: The Surprise Third-Placed Side Visits a Resurgent Lens
24 October | 8th vs 3rd
Paris FC continue to impress in their first season back in the top flight. They have taken 14 points from seven matches, climbed to third and beat Rennes 4-3 in their latest outing.
There is, however, a clear difference between their home and away performances. Paris FC have scored just three goals in three away games, recording one win, one draw and one defeat.
Lens have gradually found their rhythm after a difficult start. They beat Lyon 2-1 and Troyes 3-1, while their 14 goals scored put them joint-second in the league’s attacking rankings.
Wednesday’s Champions League outing was less successful: Lens lost 3-0 to Club Brugge. The scoreline was heavy, although the French side had chances of their own and attempted 19 shots. Their finishing at one end and defending at the other proved costly.
Paris FC may sit higher in the table, but home advantage favours Lens. Since the start of last season, they have collected 48 points on their own ground — more than any other Ligue 1 club.
Rennes vs Strasbourg: Two Sides Involved in Plenty of Goals
25 October | 6th vs 14th
There have been 29 goals in Rennes’ seven league matches and 27 in Strasbourg’s — the two highest combined totals in Ligue 1.
Rennes have scored 15 and conceded 14, while Strasbourg’s record stands at 12 scored and 15 conceded. The hosts have made much better use of those goals, however, collecting 13 points to Strasbourg’s seven.
The last round highlighted both teams’ problems. Rennes lost 4-3 to Paris FC, while Strasbourg fell 3-1 to PSG. The Alsace club have now suffered three consecutive defeats and taken just one point from their last four matches.
Rennes are much more reliable at home, where they are unbeaten in eight consecutive league games, winning six.
Previous high-scoring matches do not guarantee another goal-filled Sunday. But both teams regularly leave space for their opponents, and Strasbourg have been particularly vulnerable after losing possession.
Marseille vs Le Havre: Seven Goals in Two Rounds Against a Winless Side
25 October | 9th vs 18th
Marseille began the season with four defeats in five league matches but have since won twice in a row. Victories over Troyes and Angers brought seven goals and lifted the club to ninth place.
The quality of those opponents makes it difficult to judge just how much Marseille have improved. They are still without a point against teams from the top half of the table.
Le Havre sit bottom with two points, no victories and only five goals scored. They have lost their last three matches, conceding seven times.
The head-to-head record also heavily favours Marseille. Le Havre’s last league victory against them came back in April 1988.
Unlike the matches against Troyes and Angers, Marseille will face opponents whose priority is likely to be avoiding defeat. How effectively the hosts break down a deep defensive block could tell us more than the gap between the teams in the standings.
Other Matchday 8 Fixtures
Brest open the round against Nice on 23 October. The hosts have yet to keep a clean sheet this season, while Nice have lost all three away games, scoring only once.
Toulouse welcome Troyes, who have suffered five consecutive defeats. The hosts, by contrast, are unbeaten in four matches and have scored ten goals during that run.
Auxerre face Le Mans after winning three of their last four matches, while the newly promoted visitors have lost twice in a row. Angers, who have conceded ten goals in their last two games, take on Lorient, a team coming off consecutive wins without conceding.
What Matters Ahead of Matchday 8
With five clubs level on 14 points, one round could completely reshape the top five. PSG and Lyon will contest first place directly, while Monaco and Lille have an opportunity either to close the gap or lose ground on their rivals.
Paris FC remain the league’s biggest surprise, but their trip to Lens will test how well they perform away from home. Rennes continue to compensate for defensive mistakes with a productive attack, while Marseille are trying to recover the points dropped during their poor start.
