Ligue 1 returns after the international break with an unexpected picture at the top of the table. Monaco lead the standings, Lyon and Paris FC are right behind them, PSG sit only sixth, while Marseille have dropped all the way to 17th after five matches. Matchday 6 gives us several strong tests of those early-season positions. We break down the key fixtures and look at how the pre-match market at 888STARZ rates them.
After five matches, Monaco have 13 points, Lyon and Paris FC have 11 each, Lille and Rennes sit on 10. PSG have eight points, Lens four and Marseille just three.
Lens vs Lyon: Second in the Table, Yet Not the Favourite
9 October
This fixture opens Matchday 6 and immediately gives us one of the most interesting betting stories of the European weekend.
Lyon sit second with 11 points and remain unbeaten after five rounds. Before the break, they demolished Rennes 4–0 and improved their goal difference to 10:2.
Lens, meanwhile, are only 15th with four points. In the previous round, they lost 2–1 to league leaders Monaco.
But the pre-match market does not follow the table at all.
888STARZ Odds
- Lens to win — 2.44
- Draw — 3.80
- Lyon to win — 2.92
Despite the seven-position and seven-point gap, Lens are slight favourites.
That makes this one of the best matches of the week for our Monday review.
If Lyon continue their unbeaten run and win, the league table will have looked more accurate than the market. If Lens take all three points, the odds will have identified something the standings are not showing yet.
Monaco vs Toulouse: The Leaders Get a Clear Favourite Status
10 October
Monaco arrive in a very different position.
They begin the round top of the table with 13 points from five matches: four wins and one draw. Before the international break, Monaco beat Lens 2–1 and kept hold of first place.
Toulouse sit 13th with five points. They beat Le Havre 3–2 in their previous match but remain in the lower half.
Here, the market is much closer to what the league table suggests.
888STARZ Odds
- Monaco to win — 1.65
- Draw — 4.47
- Toulouse to win — 5.44
888STARZ gives the league leaders a clear advantage.
There is one important detail, however: Monaco will be without suspended Paris Brunner, who scored four goals in the opening five rounds.
So this is still a useful test after the international break. 1.65 reflects a clear edge, but it is far from making the result automatic.
PSG vs Le Mans: The Biggest Favourite of the French Round
10 October
PSG have started the season much more slowly than expected.
After five matches, they are only sixth with eight points. But the final games before the break suggested improvement: PSG beat Brest 1–0 and then won 2–1 away to Marseille.
Newly promoted Le Mans sit ninth with six points and arrive after a 2–1 victory over Lorient.
Despite the relatively small gap in the table, the market sees a huge difference in quality.
888STARZ Odds
- PSG to win — 1.08
- Draw — 16.50
- Le Mans to win — 34.00
This is the most one-sided market of Matchday 6.
At 1.08, there is almost no doubt about what the bookmaker expects.
Le Mans will also be without suspended defender Djibril Sidibé, which only makes the gap look wider before kick-off.
For PSG, anything other than a win would not simply be unexpected — it would be the biggest upset of the round.
Troyes vs Marseille: Seventeenth Place, Yet Still the Clear Favourite
11 October
This is the strangest fixture of the round when you look at current positions.
Troyes sit 16th with four points, while Marseille are even lower in 17th with only three. Marseille have already lost four of their first five league matches.
Before the break, both teams were beaten: Troyes lost 2–0 to Angers, while Marseille fell 2–1 at home to PSG.
Yet despite that disastrous start, the market still strongly favours the visitors.
888STARZ Odds
- Troyes to win — 4.01
- Draw — 4.03
- Marseille to win — 1.93
Marseille are clear favourites despite sitting 17th.
That is exactly what makes this fixture interesting.
If Marseille win, the market will essentially be telling us that their league position reflects a poor start rather than their true level. If Troyes take points again, the pressure on Marseille will become much more serious.
The visitors will also be without suspended captain Timothy Weah, while several other players face fitness questions after the international break.
Lille vs Le Havre: Another Strong Favourite
10 October
Another fixture worth highlighting pits fourth place against bottom.
Lille have 10 points and sit fourth, although they suffered a 2–1 defeat to Nice in the previous round.
Le Havre are in much deeper trouble: two points, no wins and last place.
888STARZ Odds
- Lille to win — 1.48
- Draw — 4.88
- Le Havre to win — 7.49
The market unsurprisingly gives Lille a major advantage.
For the hosts, this is a strong opportunity to respond immediately to the defeat against Nice and remain among the leading group.
What Else to Watch in Matchday 6
On Saturday, Brest host Angers, while Lorient face surprise third-placed Paris FC.
On Sunday, Nice take on Strasbourg and Rennes host Auxerre.
Paris FC deserve special attention. The newly promoted side already have 11 points from five matches and sit third, behind Lyon only on tiebreakers.

What the Market Is Telling Us Before Matchday 6
France gives us one of the clearest examples of how the early league table and the betting market do not always tell the same story.
Lyon sit second and remain unbeaten, yet they are not favourites away to 15th-placed Lens: 2.92 compared with 2.44.
Monaco, by contrast, receive the expected favourite status as league leaders — 1.65 compared with 5.44 for Toulouse.
For PSG, the gap becomes almost extreme: 1.08 compared with 34.00 for Le Mans, despite only three places separating them in the table.
Marseille provide a different contradiction altogether: the team are 17th, yet still clear favourites at 1.93 away to Troyes.
That makes this almost a perfect round for our preview → results format.
On Monday, we will be able to review the entire Matchday 6: did Monaco remain top, did Lyon continue their unbeaten run, did PSG justify their huge advantage in the market, and was the market right to keep trusting Marseille despite their poor start?
