Serie A Matchday 7 Preview: Juventus Test the Leaders, Milan Face Atalanta

Six rounds into the season, Serie A already feels like it has gone through several different versions of itself. Inter and Lazio share top spot on 16 points, Roma are third on 14, and Cagliari are somehow still fourth. Milan remain unbeaten in the league but have already drawn three times. Napoli are only eighth. Fiorentina are second from bottom.

Then came a wild week in Europe. Inter, Roma, Napoli and Como all lost in the Champions League, while Milan hit Salzburg for four and Juventus edged Celta 2–1 in the Europa League. Now all of that spills back into Serie A. Here are the key games and the current 888STARZ line.

Juventus vs Lazio

The biggest game of the round. And the table makes it even more interesting: Lazio arrive in Turin as joint leaders on 16 points, while Juventus are only sixth with 11.

Lazio are still unbeaten — five wins and one draw. Juve have been far less consistent: three wins, two draws and one defeat.

888STARZ:

1.69 / 4.04 / 5.71

The market almost ignores that gap in the table. Juventus are clear favourites. That is one of the most interesting contrasts of the entire weekend: a team on 11 points priced at 1.69 against a side sitting top and yet to lose.

Add Juventus’ 2–1 Europa League win over Celta, and this becomes a perfect test of what matters more right now — the Serie A table or Juve’s status and momentum.

Milan vs Atalanta

Milan are one of only three unbeaten teams left in Serie A. The problem is that three wins and three draws leave them only fifth on 12 points.

In Europe, though, they looked much sharper — a 4–0 win over Salzburg with a hat-trick from 19-year-old Alfadjo Cisse. Now they need to bring that energy back into the league. Atalanta sit 10th on nine points and have already lost three times.

888STARZ:

1.94 / 3.81 / 4.23

Milan are favourites, but hardly overwhelming ones. And 1.94 on the home win reflects the situation well: the hosts have started the season better, but they keep leaving points on the pitch.

After four goals in Europe, the market expects more. Serie A is where they now need to prove it.

Venezia vs Napoli

Napoli’s start has been anything but title-chasing form. After six rounds they sit only eighth with 10 points: three wins, one draw and already two defeats. Then came a 3–1 loss to Villarreal in the Champions League.

If there is a fixture to reset against, this might be it. Venezia have lost all six Serie A matches, conceded 16 goals and remain the only side in the league without a single point.

888STARZ:

5.06 / 4.55 / 1.67

Napoli are obvious favourites. Which is exactly why another setback would stop looking like a poor start and start looking like a real problem.

1.67 on the away win is the market’s bet that quality finally tells against the league’s bottom side.

Fiorentina vs Como

If you look only at the club names, the line might come as a surprise. After six games, Como are seventh on 11 points, while Fiorentina sit 19th on four. And the market fully accepts that reality.

888STARZ:

3.55 / 3.81 / 2.12

Como are favourites — away from home. A month ago, that would have looked unusual. Right now, it makes sense.

Fiorentina have won only once in six and lost 2–1 to Genoa last weekend. Como held Roma to 0–0, then despite losing 3–2 to Feyenoord in the Champions League, once again showed they can compete at a high level.

2.12 on the away win is another sign of how quickly the usual hierarchy is shifting in Italy.

Frosinone vs Sassuolo

Not the biggest fixture on paper, but one of the tightest lines of the round. Frosinone sit ninth on 10 points. Sassuolo are 11th on eight.

There is very little between them, and 888STARZ reflects that:

2.63 / 3.65 / 2.77

Almost a true coin flip. The hosts were beaten 3–0 by Napoli last weekend, while Sassuolo took a point off Milan in a 1–1 draw.

This is exactly the sort of game worth saving for the post-match review: the market barely separates the two teams, which makes the final result even more revealing.

Monza vs Cagliari

The table almost looks wrong here — but it is not. Cagliari are fourth with 13 points. Four wins in six games and only three goals conceded. And yet away to 16th-placed Monza, the market still does not make them clear favourites.

888STARZ:

2.49 / 3.26 / 3.26

In fact, the shortest price is on the home side. A very unusual line. Cagliari already showed last weekend why the table should not be ignored: they drew 1–1 with Juventus despite being priced at 6.54 to win before kick-off.

Now the question changes. Is the market underrating Serie A’s fourth-placed side again — or is Cagliari’s fast start finally about to hit its ceiling?

What About the Leaders?

Inter travel to Bologna. After six rounds, they are top on 16 points and have scored 18 goals — the best attack in Serie A. They are still unbeaten domestically, but come into the weekend after a painful 4–3 home defeat to Club Brugge in the Champions League. For Inter, this is about reacting to their first serious European blow of the season.

Roma host Genoa. They remain third and are also unbeaten in the league, but have drawn two in a row. Then came Wednesday’s collapse from 3–1 up to a 4–3 defeat against Real Madrid. That gives both leaders the same question heading into the weekend:

how quickly can they forget Europe?

Before Matchday 7

Serie A does not really have one dominant storyline right now — and that is exactly what makes it interesting.

Inter and Lazio share the lead.

Roma are still unbeaten but have dropped points twice in a row.

Cagliari are somehow fourth.

Milan have not lost either, but have as many draws as wins.

Napoli are only eighth after six rounds.

And against that backdrop, two Sunday lines stand out.

Juventus are clear 1.69 favourites against league-leading Lazio.

And seventh-placed Como are 2.12 favourites away at Fiorentina, a club that not long ago would have been viewed very differently.

If both prices are justified on the pitch, Matchday 7 will only reinforce the feeling that in Italy, current form matters more than club status right now.
