Monaco started the weekend on top, PSG were only sixth, and the entire leading group was separated by just a few points. By Sunday night, things had become even tighter: Lyon, PSG, Paris FC, Lille and Monaco all moved onto 14 points, with Lyon taking first place on goal difference.
The pre-match 888STARZ line produced four winning favourites from our six key fixtures. The two failures tell much more than a simple 4-out-of-6 record, though: Lille were probably unlucky not to win, while Monaco genuinely underperformed.
Lorient vs Monaco — 1–0
The biggest upset of the round was deserved. Monaco had 58% possession, but Lorient won the xG battle 1.63–0.69 and restricted the league leaders to only six shots, with Noah Cadiou scoring the winner from the penalty spot in the second half.
888STARZ: 3.87 / 3.58 / 2.10 — the 3.87 home win landed. That looks like a major surprise from the odds alone, but not from the match itself; Lorient have now won 1–0 in consecutive rounds while repeatedly allowing stronger opponents to have the ball without giving them much in dangerous areas.
For Monaco, the concern is bigger than simply losing first place. Their first difficult trip as leaders ended with only 0.69 xG, and they now sit among a five-team group level on 14 points.
Strasbourg vs PSG — 1–3
The final score looks comfortable, but PSG had to work for it. Strasbourg scored early and held the lead until the 77th minute, before Paris finally turned the game around through Illia Zabarnyi, Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue.
The comeback was backed up by the numbers rather than just individual quality. PSG finished with 2.61 xG to Strasbourg’s 0.98, dominated possession and created enough to justify the late turnaround.
888STARZ: 6.62 / 5.44 / 1.47 — the 1.47 away win landed. Before the match, the question was how Paris would respond after the emotional Champions League win over Manchester City; the first 75 minutes showed the problem was real, but their depth and chance creation eventually solved it.
Lille vs Brest — 1–1
This is exactly the kind of result where saying “the favourite failed, so the market was wrong” would be too simplistic. Lille had 67% possession, 17 shots to eight and a 1.79–0.76 xG advantage, but conceded early and only equalised from the penalty spot after the break.
888STARZ: 1.66 / 4.37 / 5.39 — the draw at 4.37 landed. It was the biggest winning price among our six selected matches, yet the underlying game actually supported Lille’s pre-match status.
The issue right now is not control but conversion. After the 3–0 defeat to Arsenal and this home draw, their finishing is worth monitoring more closely than the results themselves.
Lyon vs Nice — 2–1
Lyon finished the weekend on top, although this win was less dominant than the table might suggest. Nice scored first, Lyon turned it around before half-time, and the hosts then had to protect the lead after going down to 10 men in the 70th minute.
The xG numbers were almost identical: 1.50 for Lyon and 1.55 for Nice. That makes the 1.71 home win a successful price, but not evidence of a clear gap between the two teams.
Lyon’s strength right now may be something slightly different. They are finding ways to take points from tight matches, and after seven rounds that efficiency is enough to put them first on goal difference.
Marseille and Paris FC Delivered
Marseille responded to their European defeat with a 5–2 win at Angers, so the 2.20 away price landed. The score slightly exaggerates the gap, with xG around 2.74–2.02, although Marseille still held a clear advantage in attacking volume with 21 shots.
Paris FC also justified their unusual status as favourites by beating Rennes 4–3, which made the 2.38 home winsuccessful. This was genuinely an open game rather than a freak scoreline, with both sides producing around 3 xG and the decisive penalty arriving deep into stoppage time.
The Rest of Matchday 7
Toulouse beat Le Mans 3–0, Lens defeated Troyes 3–1, and Auxerre won by the same score at Le Havre. Auxerre have now won twice in a row, while Le Havre remain without a league victory after seven rounds.
Those results also reshaped the middle and lower parts of the table. Marseille moved up, Lens climbed, and Lorient now sit seventh, while the top five remain level on points.
What the 888STARZ Line Actually Told Us
Four of the six favourites won: PSG at 1.47, Marseille at 2.20, Paris FC at 2.38 and Lyon at 1.71. Lille at 1.66 and Monaco at 2.10 failed, but those two results should not be treated as the same kind of miss.
Lille clearly created the better chances and probably left two points behind. Monaco, by contrast, produced only 0.69 xG and were genuinely second best, so this is where the pre-match line really did overrate the favourite.
What We Take From Matchday 7
The headline number is 14 points for five different clubs. Lyon are first, followed by PSG, Paris FC, Lille and Monaco, so one bad weekend can now move a team several places at once.
The more useful signals sit underneath the table. PSG have now won four league games in a row and are creating strong chance volume again; Lorient have twice succeeded by conceding possession without conceding quality; Lille are playing better than their recent results; and Lyon’s lead currently rests more on winning close games than on consistently overwhelming opponents.
