La Liga Matchday 9 Results: Barcelona Go Nine From Nine, Real Respond Before El Clasico

Nine games, nine wins and 39 goals scored — Barcelona are still perfect in La Liga. Atletico remain second on 22 points, Real Madrid have 21, which leaves six points between Spain’s two biggest clubs ahead of El Clasico.

Before the round, we saved the 888STARZ line for six key fixtures. Most favourites delivered, but once again the most useful games were the ones where the final score either exaggerated the gap between the teams or failed to reflect the match at all.

Betis vs Barcelona — 2–5

On paper, this was Barcelona’s first serious test against another top-three side. On the pitch, the leaders still created much more — around 2.31 xG to 0.88, while Facundo Bernal’s second-half red card only made the task easier.

888STARZ: 6.68 / 5.85 / 1.44 — the 1.44 away win landed. The market read this correctly: despite the table showing first against third, the difference in actual attacking level was much greater.

The bigger trend can no longer be reduced to a winning streak. Thirty-nine goals in nine rounds show Barcelona are not surviving on narrow margins — they are consistently producing championship-level attacking output.

Villarreal vs Elche — 0–0

This is exactly why the final score should never be read without context. Villarreal finished with around 1.82 xG to 0.34, meaning the hosts fully justified their status as clear favourites in terms of chance quality.

888STARZ: 1.51 / 4.93 / 6.63 — the draw at 4.93 landed. Formally the favourite failed, but the pre-match assessment itself was sound: Villarreal created enough to win and dropped points because of finishing rather than an even contest.

That distinction matters going forward. Their current issue looks more like conversion than an inability to generate chances.

Real Madrid vs Sevilla — 4–1

The scoreline was emphatic, although the underlying numbers tell a slightly calmer story — around 1.74 xG to 1.39. Real finished far more efficiently, Kylian Mbappe scored twice, and Arda Guler was again central to much of their attacking play.

888STARZ: 1.29 / 6.71 / 11.20 — the 1.29 home win landed. The victory was deserved, but 4–1 slightly overstates the actual gap in chance quality.

For Madrid, the timing matters more. They head into El Clasico after one of their better attacking performances of the season and still trail Barcelona by six points, which gives the next meeting far more weight than an ordinary October fixture.

Espanyol vs Atletico Madrid — 0–1

Atletico once again did exactly enough. They won the xG battle 1.39–0.54, controlled the better chances and found the late goal that secured all three points.

888STARZ: 4.88 / 3.94 / 1.80 — the 1.80 away win landed. Unlike Real’s 4–1, this scoreline fits the game almost perfectly: Atletico held the edge, but never dominated enough to make a blowout likely.

After nine rounds they are on 22 points and remain Barcelona’s closest challengers. They cannot match the leaders’ attacking output, but their consistency is keeping them in range.

Two More Useful Signals From the Line

Real Sociedad beat Malaga 5–2, so the 2.29 away win landed. The xG gap was much smaller — roughly 2.08 to 1.68 — so the score reflects excellent finishing more than complete control.

Valencia and Athletic finished 0–0, despite the hosts producing around 1.13 xG to 0.75. The 2.26 away price did not land, and unlike Villarreal’s draw, Athletic did not really support their pre-match favourite status with the performance itself.

The Rest of the Results

Deportivo and Levante drew 1–1, Osasuna beat Racing 2–0, while Celta defeated Alaves 2–1. Osasuna’s performance stands out in particular: around 3.94 xG to 0.33 suggests even the two-goal margin understated their superiority.

The top of the table now looks more defined. Barcelona have 27 points, Atletico 22, Real Madrid 21, while Betis remain on 19.

What the 888STARZ Line Told Us

Four of our six favourites won: Barcelona at 1.44, Atletico at 1.80, Real Madrid at 1.29 and Real Sociedad at 2.29. Villarreal at 1.51 and Athletic at 2.26 failed.

Those two misses tell different stories. Villarreal fully supported their favourite status through chance quality and simply failed to convert; Athletic did not produce enough to justify their pre-match edge.

What We Take Forward

Barcelona currently have both the best results and the strongest attack in the league. Nine straight wins are backed by 39 goals and a +30 goal difference, so this lead is not being built on fine margins.

Real got the response they needed before El Clasico, although the 4–1 against Sevilla was more emphatic than the underlying gap. Atletico continue to stay quietly closest to the leaders, while Villarreal are one of the teams whose results could improve quickly if their finishing catches up with the quality of chances they are creating.
