Serie A produced a round where the scoreline was especially dangerous to read without context. Lazio left Turin with a 3–0 win and moved level with Inter at the top, Venezia collected their first points of the season against Napoli, while Milan almost threw away a three-goal lead.
The pre-match 888STARZ line is particularly useful here. Two big-priced outcomes landed, but the underlying numbers show that one upset was largely about finishing efficiency, while the other was much closer to pure football variance.
Juventus vs Lazio — 0–3
888STARZ: 1.69 / 4.04 / 5.71 — the 5.71 away win landed. By price, this was the biggest upset among our key fixtures, but the 0–3 score greatly exaggerates the gap on the pitch.
Juventus actually edged the xG 0.74–0.54, with both teams taking nine shots. Lazio were simply ruthless with a very limited number of opportunities, while the hosts again struggled to create enough quality in the final third.
That distinction matters going forward. Lazio’s result is excellent and their start is the best in club history, but 14 goals from roughly 10.2 xG already suggests their finishing is running ahead of chance quality.
Venezia vs Napoli — 1–0
This was the opposite story. Napoli lost despite creating 2.36 xG to Venezia’s 0.98, taking 29 shots to nine and recording 40 touches in the opposition box compared with 14. Kevin De Bruyne also missed a penalty.
888STARZ: 5.06 / 4.55 / 1.67 — the 5.06 home win landed. But saying Napoli were overrated would be misleading: the pre-match line was fully supported by the performance, while the final result was driven by poor finishing and an outstanding display from Venezia goalkeeper Filip Stankovic.
Napoli’s results are still becoming a concern, with just one point from their last three away league games. Yet they have produced around 12.7 xG for only 10 goals, so the attack is currently playing better than the scorelines suggest.
Milan vs Atalanta — 3–2
Milan justified the 1.94 home price and backed the result with the numbers — around 2.41 xG to 1.65. They raced into a 3–0 lead, then allowed Atalanta back to 3–2 and needed a late Mike Maignan save to hold on.
That leaves two conclusions at once. Milan’s attack is creating enough to win matches, but their game management after building a lead remains a weakness.
Fiorentina vs Como — 1–3
The 2.12 away win landed, and the table appears to offer another confirmation of Fiorentina’s crisis. The underlying numbers complicate that conclusion, though: the hosts won the xG battle roughly 2.25–1.77, took 19 shots to 16 and recorded almost twice as many touches in the opposition box.
Como deserve credit for their efficiency, but the 1–3 score does not mean they completely outplayed Fiorentina. For the hosts, the frustrating part is that the quality of chances is beginning to improve while the results continue to move in the opposite direction.
The Rest of the Results
Inter came from behind to beat Bologna 3–1 and stayed top on 19 points. Roma defeated Genoa 2–0 and remain close behind on 17.
Frosinone beat Sassuolo 4–2, with Antonio Raimondo scoring a hat-trick. The hosts also held a 2.10–1.55 xG advantageand won the big-chance count 5–2. Lecce produced another surprise by beating Udinese 3–0.
What the 888STARZ Line Actually Told Us
Of the five key lines already settled, only two favourites won: Milan at 1.94 and Como at 2.12. The other winning outcomes were Lazio at 5.71, Venezia at 5.06 and Frosinone at 2.63.
But the raw hit rate is almost meaningless here. Lazio won 3–0 in a nearly even game, Venezia beat Napoli despite being heavily outplayed, while Como won 3–1 even though Fiorentina produced more xG. This round is a perfect reminder of the difference between predicting the right result and reading the match correctly.
What We Take Forward
Inter currently look like the most stable leaders: 21 goals from roughly 20.1 xG means their attacking output is almost perfectly aligned with the quality they are creating. Lazio have the same 19 points, but their finishing is running well ahead of the underlying numbers, which makes them one of the most interesting teams to test over the next few rounds.
Napoli have the opposite problem: their results are worse than their chance creation suggests, so improvement is possible if finishing normalises. Juventus are more concerning — a 3–0 home defeat is one thing, but creating less than 1 xG again points to a deeper attacking problem rather than a single bad night.
