A big week of tennis is coming up in China. From October 12 to 18, the Shanghai Masters enters its decisive stages, while the Wuhan Open gets underway on the women’s tour. Both events belong to the prestigious 1000 category, with their champions set to be crowned on Sunday.
In Shanghai, some of the ATP’s biggest names are chasing another major title. Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka heads to Wuhan looking to win one of her favorite tournaments for a fourth time. Here’s what to watch this week with 888STARZ.
Shanghai Masters: Alcaraz, Djokovic and the Title Race
ATP Masters 1000 | October 7–18
One of the final Masters 1000 events of the season is already underway in Shanghai. Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev are among the leading title contenders.
Zverev is attracting particular attention as he continues his push for the top spot in the world rankings. Jannik Sinner is missing the tournament with a knee injury, potentially changing the balance of power near the top of the ATP rankings.
Djokovic and Zverev have landed in the same half of the draw, setting up a potential meeting before the final. Alcaraz is on the opposite side, where Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz could stand in his way.
The big question: who can handle the pressure of the closing rounds and claim one of the season’s last major titles?
Wuhan Open: Sabalenka Chases a Fourth Crown
WTA 1000 | October 12–18
The women’s tour turns its attention to Wuhan, where the final WTA 1000 tournament of the season begins on October 12.
Three-time champion Aryna Sabalenka enters as the main favorite, hoping to add another trophy to her impressive record at the event.
Iga Swiatek, Jessica Pegula, Mirra Andreeva and Elina Svitolina are among her main challengers. However, the tournament will be without several big names, with Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff withdrawing.
Pegula is another player worth watching. She reached last year’s final after defeating Sabalenka along the way. Another meeting between the American and the Belarusian would be one of the tournament’s standout matchups.
When Are the Biggest Matches?
The Shanghai Masters moves into its decisive rounds this week, with quarterfinal places and spots in the final stages up for grabs.
The Wuhan Open follows this schedule:
- October 12–13 — First round.
- October 14–15 — Second and third rounds.
- October 16 — Quarterfinals.
- October 17 — Semifinals.
- October 18 — Final.
Both tournaments conclude on October 18. For some players, this is a chance to strengthen their position in the rankings. For others, it’s an opportunity to make a statement before the final stretch of the season.
Who will lift the two prestigious trophies in China? We’ll have our answers on Sunday.
