Bundesliga Matchweek 4 Results: Dortmund Make It Four from Four as Bayern Hit Seven

Matchweek 4 left the Bundesliga with one perfect leader. Dortmund ground out a difficult win in Stuttgart to preserve their 100% start, Bayern responded with a 7-0 demolition of Union Berlin, while Leverkusen dealt confidently with an in-form Leipzig side. Before the weekend, the 888STARZ line did not even have Dortmund as favourites in Stuttgart — the visitors were priced at 2.87.

Stuttgart 0-1 Borussia Dortmund: four games, four wins

Not Dortmund’s prettiest performance, but exactly the sort of match strong seasons are built on.

Stuttgart made life difficult, kept the visitors quiet for long stretches and reached half-time with the game still goalless.

The breakthrough finally came in the 70th minute. Substitute Jobe Bellingham found Maximilian Beier, who scored the only goal of the night.

Interestingly, Stuttgart had actually been slight favourites before kick-off at 2.48, with Dortmund at 2.87.

Niko Kovac’s side found a way anyway.

Dortmund now have 12 points from 12. It is their first four-win start since 2015 and only the fourth time in club history they have opened a Bundesliga season with four straight victories.

They head into the break top of the table.

Bayern 7-0 Union Berlin: the favourites simply kept going

On paper, this was the most predictable fixture of the round.

Bayern were as short as 1.05 to win. The only real question was how long Union could hold out.

The answer: not very long.

Jamal Musiala opened the scoring, Harry Kane struck twice, Michael Olise completed a hat-trick and Ismael Saibari added another.

Seven goals. No reply.

There is not much to say about the pre-match expectations here. Bayern were overwhelming favourites and pushed that status about as far as it could go.

They now have 10 points from four games, but Dortmund still sit above them.

Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 RB Leipzig: Schick scores again

Leverkusen’s league start had been uneven, so a home meeting with Leipzig looked like a useful test.

They passed it comfortably.

Patrik Schick broke the deadlock just before half-time from a Miguel Gutierrez delivery. Gutierrez then scored himself in the 57th minute with a strike from outside the box.

Leipzig had earlier seen a goal ruled out for offside.

For Schick, that makes it four Bundesliga rounds in a row with a goal.

Leverkusen had been 2.06 favourites before kick-off, and this time the line got it right. They stopped Leipzig from carrying over the momentum of the previous week’s 5-0 win over Hamburg and gave themselves a much better feeling heading into the break.

Two More Results Worth Talking About

Paderborn 3-1 Hoffenheim

Now this was a proper upset.

Paderborn were priced at 4.61, while Hoffenheim were strong favourites at 1.72.

The hosts scored three times and picked up their first win of the season. Even more remarkably, they had not scored a Bundesliga goal before this match.

Santiago Castaneda, Stefano Marino and Steffen Tigges all found the net.

Not a bad way to get both your first goals and first victory on the board.

Borussia Monchengladbach 3-4 Mainz

Seven goals and another brutal evening for Gladbach.

Mainz were slight favourites at 2.32, but even that did not really hint at the chaos that followed.

Gladbach lost again and remain without a point after four rounds. They have already conceded 16 goals.

When the table still shows zero after four matches, it stops looking like a poor start and starts looking like a serious problem.

Freiburg dropped points for the first time with a 2-2 draw in Frankfurt. Werder came back from 2-0 down to beat Augsburg 3-2, while Hamburg picked up their first home win of the season against Cologne.

But the biggest story remains at the top.

Dortmund are the only Bundesliga side yet to drop a single point. Bayern sit two behind, Freiburg are also on 10, while Leverkusen are beginning to repair what had been an uneven opening to the season.

Four rounds is still a very small sample.

But Dortmund head into the break with exactly what they wanted: first place and a perfect 12 from 12.
